The tide gauge at the north pier has been replaced for the first time since 1987, swapping out a mechanical float-and-pulley system for a digital sensor that reports water levels every six minutes instead of once a day. The upgrade, installed last week by the county's coastal monitoring office, gives Port Alden its first near-continuous record of harbor tide levels.

The old gauge worked on a principle that hasn't changed much since the nineteenth century: a float sitting on the water's surface rode up and down inside a stilling well, a perforated pipe that damped out wave action, and a mechanical pen traced the float's movement onto a paper chart that a technician had to change and read by hand once a day.

The new instrument is a radar-based sensor mounted above the water rather than in it, which measures the distance to the surface using the return time of a low-power radar pulse and converts that into a water level reading. Readings are logged automatically and transmitted off-site, meaning nobody has to visit the pier to retrieve data.

Why six minutes matters

Marine scientist and county monitoring coordinator Ines Lindqvist said the jump from daily to six-minute readings changes what the data can actually be used for. A single daily reading can tell you the tide came in; it can't tell you how fast, or whether a storm surge briefly pushed water higher than the tide alone would explain.

"With one point a day, you get a tide table. With one point every six minutes, you get the actual shape of the water moving through the harbor, storm surges, wind setup, the works," Lindqvist said. "That's the difference between knowing the tide came in and knowing why the seawall got hit harder on one Tuesday than any other Tuesday that month."

The finer-grained data will feed into the same tide record engineers cited when assessing the harbor seawall's condition, and Lindqvist said six years of continuous readings should be enough to detect subtle trends, like whether the harbor's high-tide baseline is creeping upward faster than the regional average, that a once-daily reading could never have resolved.

The county plans to publish the raw readings on a public data page later this year, though a temporary feed showing the current water level is already live at the county's coastal monitoring site.
